BROADFLASH
Broadflash cottage as pictured below in 1969, the place where my
parents and i spent many years, surrounded by fields and woodland
it was a real adventuring place to spend a child hood. The
cottage has had many uses, including an officers head quarters
during the second world war, while troops were encamped in and
around Merton. Just before we moved in to the house a local
poultry dealer kept his stock here. Below right, after a fire had
gutted the roof area in May 1990 the house received a new roof,
but with tiles this time.

Below George Page loading or unloading his coupes which contained
rabbits and chickens at the live stock market at Swaffham which stood behind the
Greyhound pub.
George was a regular on a Saturday at the live stock market,
buying and selling.
In the 1960s this would be my part loading
and unloading. I have some happy memories working for George who was a real
local character,
He lived in the bungalow along Broadflash.
Christmas time always became the real busy time of the year for Mike Kay,
Richard Harrowing., my Mother and I . George had his serious side but
always liked playing a joke or two. First encounter i had with Georges joke
playing, would be when he payed out my wages for the week, What do you want this year boy,
your wage packet or this envelope I have in my pocket ? George would say. Picking the
wage packet would seem the best idea I felt, so I did... George would give me my wages,
after some 10 minutes later George would be back, Here are Boy, better have this envelope as well,
which would contain a nice tidy bonus. George was one of the old school as we
say, you treated him well he would return it.
Picture below right shows George with his wife Dorothy formally Bird at there home at Broadflash,
Dorothy being the grand daughter of another well known figure, Dan Bullen seen in the bottom picture. A Miller and farmer, born & buried Stow Bedon, Dan
died at the grand old age of 105 yrs old.
Seen below at the age of 102..
