Anciently called
Mere-tune or Mere Town, Merton is a small village in the county
of Norfolk England. A small parish in the hundred known as Wayland. Two miles
South from near by market town of Watton, 10 miles North of
Thetford. Population
of Merton is recorded in 1891 as 180,
1912 as 133 and in 1933-164.
It is my belief that the original village once stood close to the church.
Having Worked the land myself, during the 1970s whilst
removing woodland from this area to extend the fields to make way for more arable land,
During this time I
found evidence such as pottery, glass, a broach and old building materials. My conclusion was that the
original village would have stood just a few yards north of the church.
The web site contains just a very tiny sample of my collection, showing
various information, places and people of Merton in days gone by.
