Merton rectory is built.

Stone Laid.
April. A foundation stone is laid at Wayland Hall, Watton,
and laid by Lady Walsingham. the hall was opened on November 3rd

1st Exhibition.
September. The first exhibition of the Wayland Agricultural Society was held at
Watton, under the presidency of Lord Walsingham.

Coming of age.
July. The scene in Merton park, rejoicing with some 700 people on the coming of age of the
Hon, Thomas degrey, a pavilion was erected near the famous Merton Oak.
Fireworks concluded the day.

Walsinghams Ball.
July 30th. Lord & Lady Walsingham gave a ball to 150 tenants on the Merton estate.

Prince arrives.
November. The Prince of Wales arrived at Merton on a visit to Lord Walsingham.

Jubilee Festivities.
June 25th. Under the direction of Mr Henry woods estate agent
For Lord Walsingham, Gave all Labourers a half day holiday,
along with there wives and children. For the celebrations of the queens Jubilee.
All met at Home farm Merton at 2pm for the first event, A cricket match held between
Married and Single, Other events included Flat races & jumping in sacks,
Followed at 6pm by a meat supper with
a toast to the health of the Queen, Rev A M Reed presided at the head of the table.
Rev Reed also
acted as judge of the sports during the day.
Later Jubilee medals were distributed to the children.
Flights of rockets were sent up, under the supervision
of Mr C Ames.

Lord Walsingham killed on his Merton estate 185
woodpigeons to his own gun, the birds offering good shots
over very tall trees.

Harvest Festival.
October
10th.. At the Parish Church the harvest festival thanks
giving was held. Mr George Barrell, head game keeper at
the Hall, was responsible for some beautiful decorations.
An overflowing congregation in the evening when the
Rector preached the harvest sermon. Mr Basil Crane was at
the organ. The collection went to the Norfolk &
Norwich Hospital.

Welcome Home.
October..
Rev'd Kent and Mrs Kent , return home and were invited to
the recreation room, where they received an enthusiastic
welcome from a crowd of parishioners and friends. Helen
Matthews a small school girl, presented Mrs Kent with a
bouquet of carnations.
Miss Emily Pease made a presentation of a silver
inkstand, inscribed with a book containing the names 210
subscribers from the three parishes, Merton, Thompson and
Tottington. Mrs Crane gave her services at the piano.

Blenheim Crash.
April
6th. Bleneim IV L8740 YH- of 21 Sqn, Take off from
Watton, While only in the air for a short time a few minutes later
crashes into trees nr the Shell house in Merton Park. No survivors...

Blenheim Crash.
22-23 January. Blenheim IV N3553 UX- of 82 Sqn, Take Off
from Bodney, Crashes almost immediately in Merton Park
crashing into trees and finally hitting a brick wall, one
survived, but later died from his injuries.

Pantomime.
February.
Successful production Pantomime of "The Sleeping
Beauty" by Merton Hall pupils at Merton Hall by
permission of Lord & Lady Walsingham.
A cast of 20 young players, there were some fine talent
revealed under the direction of Mrs Sutherey the school
matron. was appreciated by a large audience.
The stage scenery and back ground of woodland settings were
the work of the young amateur performers.

Car Crash.
April. 6 RAF service men and 1 service woman, crash
into oak tree at deep drain it is believed that only one survived.

1968 |
Funeral.
Jan 1968 The Funeral of Hon Mrs Cythia de Grey, Wife of Hon Richard de grey.
Mrs de grey was the daughter of Mr & Mrs Thomas Hewitt-Myring of London, Richard & Cythia were married
in 1925, there early married life spent in Mexico.
The congregation included nearly all the tenants and employees on the Merton estate. |
